On June 27, 1988 a squad of helmeted riot police and an antiterrorist SWAT team swooped down on a downtown Montreal neighbourhood to evict and arrest a group of low-income tenants. In what must be one of the most shocking examples of government intervention in Canada's history, protestors and tenants were assaulted and arrested (26 to date) in an effort to help real estate developers in their campaign to evict residents and demolish a neighbourhood.
